A generator and enough food and fuel for five to seven days won't protect a family from the storm surge and flooding from a hurricane.
We were ready to batton down the hatches, hole up in our house and live simply. We are equipped with emergency supplies for at least five days until the winds and rains blew over and power is restored.
Tonight we confirmed with our Parish FEMA liason that we are, in fact, expected to mandatorily evacuate, starting at 10:00 Sunday morning because we live south of Highway 22.
Travis boarded up the windows today and I've been doing laundry in anticipation of not having power for a while. Glad we did that. We'll be packing those clean clothes tomorrow morning and we already have our home ready to weather the storm.
The reason we were asked to evacuate is the certain storm surge from the HUGE lakes Maurepas and Ponchatrain that are actually connected to one another and the coast. Each lake has it's own high and low tide and the storm surge they are predicting is 18-20'. We THINK our house is about 22-26' above sea level (at least we hope). That means a 20' storm surge backing up into the marshy coast of lake Maurapas we live along woud come within 2' of our house! Yikes! We are praying our house doesnn't flood! We've actually seen this water backing up thing happen on a smaller scale, when the spring rains from up north totally filled every waterway from Illinois down. The areas within about a mile of our house just filled up like a bathtub! Some people were parking on the street and using their airboats and fishing boats to get to their front doors.
Making the decision to leave our home in vulnerability was hard, but we have no choice now. Our family safety is more important than our belongings, and we're heading the warnings of the experts on this one. Please pray for our home to stay intact and for everyone to get our safely!

Thanks for the update! I've been thinking about your family and praying that you'll be safe.
Hi Davises,
It's good to hear from you. We looked you up on the map and saw you are quite a ways inland, but I know flood waters are a concern. I'm glad you are leaving, to be safe. We will continue to pray for everyone in the gulf coast, and your home.

I have been checking your page several times worried about if you would be evacuated. I wish you weren't in this situation, but it sounds like you are as prepared as possible(as always:-)! We will be praying for your families safety and for a dry home when you return.
