Local news was broadcasting Gustav 24-7, so we kept an ear on the TV while we made final preparations to hole up in our home and weather the hurricane. I made my final trip to Winn Dixie in Ponchatoula that morning for extra last minute food supplies to get us through the anticipated several days inside our home during the storm and power outages after. The frozen foods and fresh meats were already off the shelves and packed up to be loaded and shipped north due to the expected power outages!
We got out the window coverings the previous homeowner left in the shed, made a few more that were missing and put them up. I did all of our laundry so it would be done before the electricity went out. We got word from a TV news update around 9:00 p.m. that our parish ordered a mandatory evacuation for we residents living south of highway 22 that would take effect the next morning at 10:00 a.m. I confirmed the evacuation over the phone with the Tangipahoa Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness. We decided to leave in the morning.
